Understanding the spiritual practice of seeking Allah's guidance before making important decisions.
Istikhara (استخارة) literally means "seeking goodness" — asking Allah to guide you to the right path. It is a Sunnah prayer taught by the Prophet Muhammad ☜ to seek Allah's guidance whenever facing an important decision or uncertainty.
It is performed when a person is unsure about a permissible action — whether to proceed or not. Istikhara is a form of tawakkul (reliance upon Allah), acknowledging that He alone knows what is truly best for us.
"The Prophet ☜ used to teach us Istikhara in all matters as he used to teach us the chapters of the Quran." — Sahih Al-Bukhari, 7390
After completing two rak'ahs of voluntary prayer (nafl), recite the following supplication with sincerity, keeping your specific matter in your heart at the appropriate moment.

O Allah, I seek Your guidance by virtue of Your knowledge, and I seek ability by virtue of Your power, and I ask You from Your great bounty. You have power and I have none. You know and I know not. You are the Knower of all unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter (mention your concern) is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and my affairs — then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me. And if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood, and my affairs — then turn it away from me, and turn me away from it, and decree for me whatever is good wherever it may be, and make me content with it.
Ensure you are in a state of ritual purity before beginning the prayer.
Perform two units of voluntary prayer. In the first rak'ah recite Surah Al-Kafirun after Al-Fatihah; in the second, Surah Al-Ikhlas.
After the prayer, recite the Istikhara du'a. When you reach "this matter," hold your specific concern sincerely in your heart.
The sign of Istikhara is not a dream — it is the ease or difficulty Allah places in your path. Proceed with trust in His wisdom.
Istikhara is only for halal matters. It is not performed for decisions that are clearly forbidden in Islam.
If you remain uncertain, repeat Istikhara up to seven times. Repetition is encouraged when needed.
A dream is not required. Guidance manifests through the ease or difficulty that follows in your circumstances.
Istikhara complements consultation and deliberation — it does not replace them. Take action with full trust in Allah.
